New Feature

Data units, transfer speeds & smarter autocomplete

· v0.6.3 · 2 min read

CalNote now speaks storage and bandwidth. Two new unit categories — Data Size and Data Speed — join the existing seven, bringing the total to 9 unit types and over 70 supported units.

Data Size: bits to petabytes

Convert between 10 storage units using binary (1024-based) factors — the way most people think about file sizes.

  • Byte-based: B, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB
  • Bit-based: bit, Kbit, Mbit, Gbit

Type the short code (GB, MB) or the full name (gigabyte, megabytes) — both work. Try it:

Data Speed: bandwidth calculations

The new Data Speed category covers 10 transfer rate units, also binary 1024-based for consistency.

  • Byte-based: Bps, KBps, MBps, GBps, TBps, PBps
  • Bit-based: bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps

Results display in the familiar MB/s and Gbit/s notation. Perfect for calculating download times, comparing ISP plans, or sizing network infrastructure:

Smarter autocomplete after “to”

The autocomplete popup is now context-aware when converting units. Type 15 GB to and the suggestions will:

  • Only show compatible units — data size units, not temperatures or currencies
  • Exclude the source unit — no point suggesting GB when you’re already converting from GB
  • Hide variables — after to, you always want a unit, not a variable name

This applies to all unit categories, not just data sizes. Converting 5 kg to will only show weight units, 100 kph to will only show speed units, and so on.

Other improvements

  • Check for updates — a new “App” section in Settings shows the current version, when the last update check ran, and a manual “Check for updates” button
  • Cleaner help modal — the supported units list now uses a single-column layout for better readability
  • Updated landing page — the homepage demo now showcases currency conversions

CalNote now supports 9 unit categories with over 70 units, plus 26 currencies with daily exchange rates. Open app.calnote.eu and try the new data conversions.
